Laredo lender is adding more branches in Alamo City (March 30, 2007)

As printed in the San Antonio Business Journal - March 30, 2007 by Tamarind Phinisee

Falcon International Bank is moving forward with an aggressive branch expansion in South Texas.

At the top of the list is a plan to open a new branch at its property at Bandera Road and Loop 1604.

The Laredo-based bank originally announced plans to develop this site three years ago. Now, those plans are coming to fruition.

Hugo Gutierrez III, banker and business development executive for Falcon Bank in San Antonio, says the bank has broken ground on a 16,500-square-foot facility on the 2.5 acre site.

Part of the facility -- 3,500 square feet -- will be dedicated to a Falcon bank branch, which will serve as the end cap of the property. The remaining space will be leased out to retail tenants.

Completion of the structure is set for the end of the year.

Gutierrez says the bank also has signed a letter of intent to acquire property near Interstate Highway 10 and Loop 1604 where it plans to build another branch location.

Aside from growth in the Alamo City, Gutierrez says Falcon International is eyeing growth in other parts of Central and South Texas.

"We want to concentrate on expanding in the markets where Falcon already has a presence, like San Antonio and maybe add more locations," he says.

One hot spot has been the Rio Grande Valley. Last week, the bank held a grand opening for its second location in Eagle Pass. The full-service 6,568-square-foot branch is located at 476 S. Bibb Ave.

About a year ago, the lender opened two full-service locations in Del Rio.

In addition, two more Falcon Bank facilities are slated to open in the Lower Rio Grande Valley region by the end of this year. Construction has begun on the first facility, which will be located at 500 E. Business Highway 83 in McAllen -- the lender's second branch in that city. Another branch facility is planned for 605 N. Shary Road in Mission, Texas.

Falcon also unveiled its first branch in Brownsville two weeks ago. The 4,000-square-foot branch is located in The Corner Shopping Center on Boca Chica Boulevard.

"We have also purchased property in San Marcos and hope to have a location there within the next two years. And, we are very seriously looking at property in Austin," Gutierrez says.

Falcon does not now have a branch operation in that city.

Building blocks

All of this expansion activity, Gutierrez says, will be nurtured by changes in leadership from the top down.

In December of last year, Hugo Gutierrez' uncle, Adolfo, assumed the role of CEO and chairman after Adolfo's father, Hugo Gutierrez Sr., stepped down.

Adolfo Gutierrez, in turn relinquished his position as president and chief operating officer at Falcon to Gilbert Narvaez Jr. The lender also appointed four regional presidents for its South Central, Southwest, Lower Rio Grande and Southern Coastal regions. Richard Terry Cullen was named president for the South Central region, which includes San Antonio and Buda.

These changes, Hugo Gutierrez says, allow Adolfo Gutierrez to focus on promoting the bank, while delegating everyday decision making to those at the local level.

In addition, he says, it allows the bank to continue to grow without sacrificing the customized personal attention of a small bank.

Falcon International Bank, founded in 1986, was acquired by the Gutierrez family in 1995, at which time it had 20 employees and $52 million in assets.

Today, the bank operates two offices of representation in Mexico and has a total of 13 branches in South Texas, including two in San Antonio. It also has more than 300 employees and in excess of $665 million in assets.

Falcon International Bank Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at New Full-Service Brownsville Branch (March 22, 2007)

On March 16, 2007, Falcon International Bank proudly hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its thirteenth full-service branch, located in Brownsville, Texas. The branch, conveniently located in The Corner Shopping Center on Boca Chica Blvd., is Falcon's first presence in Brownsville and the newest addition to the bank's expanding franchise.

Approximately one hundred people attended the midday ceremony. Recently appointed Southern Coastal Region President Arturo R. Farias and members of his regional team extended their hospitality to various business and civic leaders. Also in attendance were several of Falcon's Laredo-based executives, including Gilbert Narvaez, Jr., President/COO, Roy Gonzales, SEVP, Ana P. Valdez, SEVP, and Jorge Gonzalez, EVP. Narvaez, who spoke on behalf of Adolfo E. Gutierrez, Chairman of the Board, expressed the bank's commitment to the Brownsville community and recognized Farias as a well-known and respected banker in Brownsville who is also dedicated to his community.

In addition to Falcon staff members, many prominent Brownsville business and community leaders attended the ceremony, lending an atmosphere of celebration, support and encouragement. Though there were far too many attendees to name each specifically, Falcon wishes to express its appreciation to past Brownsville Chamber of Commerce David Merill, who served as Master of Ceremony, Pastor Bob Clark, who provided the invocation, and Monsignor Roberto Sifuentes Aranda, who traveled from Matamoros, Mexico to offer the ceremony a blessing and special prayer. Falcon also thanks Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., Chief of Staff, Paul Cowen, who presented Arturo R. Farias with the Texas flag that was flown above the State Capitol on Texas Independence Day. Finally, Falcon also thanks Laredo businessman and community activist Dr. Hector Farias, Jr., who served as the event's special guest speaker, and Margal M. Vicars, past Mayor of Brownsville.

The opening of the Brownsville Corner Shopping Center branch comes at the twenty-year milestone for Falcon Bank, marking a track record of unprecedented growth, regional and national top awards, and leadership and participation in numerous community-based programs. Falcon's partnership with the Shopping Center is an example of the bank's philosophy of offering banking services where retail services are located, allowing customers a "bank where they shop" convenience. The 4,000 sq. ft. facility offers a complete line of financial products and services, including personal and business checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, money market accounts, IRA's, night depository, safe deposit boxes, residential and commercial mortgages, auto loans and a wide variety of other types of commercial and consumer loans, home equity loans, retirement products and wealth and investment management.

March of Dimes recognizes Falcon Bank and Adolfo E. Gutierrez (March 1, 2007)

March of Dimes recognizes Falcon Bank and Adolfo E. Gutierrez (March 1, 2007)

Falcon Bank and Adolfo E. Gutierrez receive top recognitions

The March of Dimes has long been the country's leader in raising money and awareness for the most helpless of victims: premature babies. This year, WalkAmerica, March of Dimes' biggest fundraiser, will draw up to 20,000 teams in 1,100 communities across the country, all united in the fight to save babies.

Falcon International Bank has been an integral part of Laredo's March of Dimes chapter since 1999, when its staff members began fundraising for and participating in WalkAmerica. Last year the bank was recognized as Laredo's #1 WalkAmerica Corporate Team. This acknowledgment honors the relentless energy of Falcon's employees who, through various fund-raising campaigns, helped raise an incredible total of $25,252 for March of Dimes.

Additionally, Mr. Adolfo E. Gutierrez, Falcon's Chairman of the Board and last year's March of Dimes' honorary chairman, was recently recognized as Laredo's #1 Top Walker. This distinguished recognition exemplifies the commitment with which Gutierrez approaches every endeavor; through his unyielding efforts, Gutierrez raised an astounding total of $11,176 for March of Dimes.

This year, Falcon is a March of Dimes Start/Finish Sponsor in addition to holding other fund-raising campaigns, such as the selling of beanie babies and awareness bracelets. Falcon will also participate in the next WalkAmerica, which will be held on April 22, 2007 at the Laredo Community College downtown campus.
